  Article 62-Spies
62.1 Spies
A spy is a person who provides direct intelligence, or provides the transmission/courier of direct intelligence.
The use of spies is one of the most ancient and noble methods of warfare, for the lives of many soldiers have been saved from the wise use of spies. In contrast, many soldiers and generals have lost their lives because of the poor use of spies.
62.2 The ancient categorization of spies
The most ancient military theories consider there are just five main categories of spies:
Local spies, internal spies, double spies, dead spies, and living spies.

  Local Spies
For local spies, we use the enemy's people.

  Internal spies
For internal spies we use the enemy's officials.

  Double Spies
For double spies we use the enemy's spies.

  Dead spies
For dead spies we use agents to spread misinformation to the enemy.

  Living spies
For living spies, we use agents to return with reports.
62.3 The careful handling of spies
Only the wisest ruler can use spies. Generally, if you want to attack an army, besiege a walled city, assassinate individuals, you must know the identities of the defending generals, assistants, associates, gate guards, and officers.
If a spy's activities are leaked before they are to begin, the spy and those who know should be dealt with severely.
Therefore, of those close to the military, none is closer than spies, no reward more generously given, and no matter in greater secrecy.

62.4 Never permit spies into your command
No matter how trusted, now matter how valuable the claimed intelligence, a wise general never permits a spy to enter a war room or meet with a command team.
A spy, by definition is a person capable of the highest level of deception. This means a spy--even the most trusted-- can be a double or even triple agent. Therefore, only the most arrogant and foolish of leaders believe they are the only ones who can direct the actions of a spy.
A general that ignores this most ancient maxim may soon find themselves and their staff the victims of such a "trusted spy".
