A key element of war and the nature of modern warfare. Tactics are the methods of war used in the lead up and during applications of force and battle. Military strategy is a common collective name used to define the execution of plans and manœuvering of forces in battle.

Deception |
|
| |
The essence of war is deception, therefore the most artful of the three broad categories of tactics of battle is deception. |

The art of deception leads itself to infinite varieties of the same simple themes, generation after generation. Because few in each generation have a memory or interest of history, the lessons of war are quickly forgotten enabling the most ancient and classic of deception techniques to be used again and again. |

The four main categories of tactics |

While there are infinite varieties of maneuvres on the battlefield, there in essence a limited set of tactics, based on the set play of materials, location, enemy, intent and method of deception. |

These individual tactics have variously been described differently over the ages, but their essence has remained the same for thousands of years. The four main categories of deceptive tactics are: |
